More events will be added when information becomes available. In the New Testament, Christian apostle and evangelist whose name is given to the second Gospel. It was probably written AD 65–70, and used by the authors of the first and third Gospels. He is the patron saint of Venice, and his emblem is a winged lion. His feast day is on the 25th April.

Above St Mark's Basilica and Square, Venice, Italy

St Mark's Square (the Piazza San Marco) is at the centre of Venice. It contains the 11th-century cathedral of St Mark, who is the patron saint of the city. This five-domed Byzantine cathedral is decorated with marble and mosaics, and four Greek bronze horses dating from the 3rd or 4th century. Sculptures of lions, the symbol of St Mark, are to be found in the square and on its buildings.

1856

The Vicar of the Holy Trinity the Rev Joseph Lowe visualised that the area in his parish covered by fields and lanes would soon become thickly populated district and noted when children had finished their daily toils they were seen to be roaming the bye lanes or waste lands growing in ignorance and acquiring habits of vice, so he thought of a way to alleviate the problem.

1857

A cottage on Lever St was acquired and used as a Sunday School, the Rev Lowe was assisted by Squire Openshaw including Mr Thomas Hall Arrowsmith and many others.

1858

The project prospered and two more cottages were built next to the original one as more homes were being built nearby so there were more children that needed their minds occupied.

1859

Row after row of cottages being built for the workers of the factories and mills that were also being built in the district that was once wasteland two years ago.

1860

The Rev Lowe saw that the Sunday School was becoming overcrowded and he found himself bound to attempt greater things. Mr George Piggott purchased the surrounding land for the building of a proper school and so the present school building came to be built. Piggott St and Piggott Park is named after George
The Earl of Bradford Orlando George Charles Bridgeman 1819-1898 gave £200 towards the £3,255 it would cost to build and fit a new school, it was designed by a Bolton Architect Mr C Holt and consisted of two rooms for boys and girls school each 102ft by 20ft and an infants room 60ft by 20ft and a Master's house.
The Sunday school was to be transferred into this new building so a Day School could start.

1861

The opening of the school the 8th of August by the Lord Bishop of Manchester at a tea party at which 300 people were present, it was named Lever Street Holy Trinity National School, it opened it's doors the very next day and the Rev Lowe put one of his curates in charge of the district the Rev John George Doman for the first year the school was given a grant of £162.
The number of children on the roll in it's first year was 281.

Because of the shortage of qualified teachers in the early years and because teaching was not regarded as a profession so began a system that employed Pupil Teachers, they usually were from the same school and began teaching at age 13 and their apprenticeship would last for 4 to 5 years. They would be taught the lessons for the day by the Master before school opens and then would go on to teach the rest of the pupils what they had learnt, this practice continued up to around 1906-07.

When War broke out I was four and when my father came back from the War I was 9. Five years was such a long time. The War started and that's when they'd started teaching us in school that when the siren went everyone had to get up quickly and quietly and march to the door, and everybody then filed out and down into the cellars which they'd made into air raid shelters. There were forms along each side of the wall and the children all sat there. We tried to talk or say poems or the teacher would tell us a story just to keep us good and not get upset. There were some children that use to cry, because they was frightened. Most children were frightened, but you just sort of had a laugh and a joke with your friend and that, and there you would sit until it came. Also you had your gas mask, put it on for so long and when there was no threat really of gas you took it off. But you carried it everywhere with you just to be on the safe side.
Audrey Cole nee Miller ex St Marks Pupil.

OUR photographer captured the scene at St Mark's Church, Bolton, in November, 1966, (photo soon) when the Band of the Bolton Corps of the Salvation Army accompanied the hymn singing at the annual service of installation of the new president of the Bolton Council of Churches.

The incoming president, the Rev J. N. Wood, Vicar of St Mark's, is seen wearing his badge of office on the left. He is accompanied by the retiring president, Mr H. Sharples and the secretary, the Rev Arthur J. Long. It was the first time that the Salvation Army band had taken part in this service.

On the 25th April St Marks Day the church is 100 years old it is also the last day that the church will open it's doors, the decision to close the church was said to be because of dwindling parishioners who were moving further from the parish and also the area was being re-developed, but according to records the school and church had been under threat from the 1950s, but it was the determination of the staff to continue to give good schooling when more modern schools were being built all through the borough.

In December the last incumbent the Rev John N Wood finally found the last of the movable furniture new homes and left the building.

2003

Jan. Researching material in the Bolton Archives and Local Studies, I came across a Register from St Mark's covering the years 1930 to 1972, I decided to find out more about my old primary school.
After a year of studying Log Books, Photo's, The Register, Microfilms, and with the help of St Marks Staff from the Archives, I begin to restore the photo's and to make a copy of the register.
Oct. I begin to build the St Mark's Web site and start to recieve emails about the site

2004

Visits to the homes of St Marks ex pupils help tremendously in expanding the site with photo's, memorabilia, and memories of the School and Church.
Nov. Links to Bolton.org web site are made.

2005

Lots more emails not only from ex St Mark's pupils but from the people of Bolton and ex Boltonians from all over the world.
Jan. Permission to enter the old school and photograph the interior is made possible by permission of Blackshaw, Sykes & Morris, Robert Kenyon also permission to enter Bolton Dance and Performing Arts was also granted by Teresa Harper.
Feb. Links to the Bolton Revisited site are made.
May. New web site publishing software and broadband connection is acquired for the St Mark's Web site due to the increasing size of the site and the many more photo's being used as reference by kind permission from other Bolton web sites.

Many more visits to ex pupils are planned for the remaining of the year.

2006

Many more emails this year, with promises of photo's from ex pupils.
Also this year received a 100 year old St Marks Church cloth with a likeness of the Church, one of a pair, the other was given to The Parish Church Museum, See CH065.

2007

St Marks has been in the Bolton Evening News Twice this year already on the Looking Back page and with the site being mentioned every time someone sends a photo to the BEN.
Baptisms and Weddings performed at St Marks Church are to be researched, documented and published on the site this will take some considerable time to complete.

2008

This is the St Mark's 5th year on the web.
New pages will be added this year with names of those who served in H.M Forces, in the Collieries, and Cotton Mills.

2009

With the St Mark's web site now it's 6th year and most of the hardest work done, the baptisms should be finished before the end of 2009, this will give me time to delve deeper into St Marks's.

One thing I have found in my research is that a time capsule has been hidden in the area with a copy of the Bolton Daily Chronicle, and Bolton Evening News from 1884, also a one half penny and a plan of a building relating to St Mark's, this information I have passed on to Bolton Museum and Local Archives.
